LWB 2017 Kid Programming

Librarians Without Borders was a great experience for all of us...

We were greeted by the whole school on Monday.

And then there was recess.

The school founder is well grounded and focused.

The little kids got masks with their story.

And a play.

And then they did a word recognition and sentence making activity with blocks.

The middle group liked their story.

After which they made masks.

Success!

We read the first chapter of A Monster Calls with the older kids.

They had some reflective moments and then a "human knot" activity after the story.

 They had fun (and so did the librarians).

There was a bit of a nature theme going on for Earth Day.

And the tree ended up being a great addition to the library.

We brought 200 books, purchased an additional 100 and got them all cataloged and processed!

I think I may have forgotten to mention that I am going on a service trip later this month to Guatemala with Librarians Without Borders.

I have been busy with my sub-group, working up programming for the 7th - 10th graders.  I am the designated Spanish speaker in my group (wish me luck, I'm a bit rusty).   What does that mean?  I've been practicing reading aloud in Spanish - the first chapter of A Monster Calls - as well as translating instructions and programming information (lucky for me the book we're using with the kids was already available in Spanish so I didn't have to translate that!), buying books to donate to the school and packing.

Oh, and I've also been reading Pedagogy of the Oppressed, because critical pedagogy is the philosophy behind the school and the LWB project.  I think it's hilarious that I am reading this book.

Because I purchased so many books to donate, I have to take two suitcases.  I'm making sure that what I will be bringing home fits in just one so I can leave the second one behind.

That means that right now I'm testing space with one for my stuff:

I wasn't going to buy so many books, but my employer is supporting me both professionally and financially, which meant I had a personal budget allocation that could go for donations.

Needless to say, I'm super excited.  We'll be mostly in Quetzaltenango, but we're going to see Lake Atitlan and Antigua too.

My granddaughter turns 3 tomorrow (my dad's birthday). There was a party yesterday.

Masks were made - they were very popular.

Worn doubled up, even.

It was a beautiful day, so there was some outside time.

I used to have a day-care person who said if the kids weren't dirty by the end of the day they couldn't have had any fun.

Lulu knows how to have fun.

Opening packages is so much fun.

And perhaps the most amazing thing?

She had a polka-dotted cake.
